Samovodska charshia

The Samovodska charshiya was set up in the sixties of XIX century when Tarnovo began to grow west of the economic center Bazhdarlak. Two streets form a commercial shops, craftsmans’ stores, workshops and inns. One of them starts from a small square, now known as Samovodski market. During the years of the Revival here are situated charshiyas /streets/, which are differentiated by the crafts of the people, working there, Hadji Davidov’s, Hadji Velikov’s and Atanas Yonoolu inns.

In the sall street which starts west of Samovodski market, along with craftsmen workshps is the preserved today Hadji Nikoli inn. After the Liberation this business part of Tarnovo kept the tradition of handicrafts. It became a symbol of crafts-commercial character of the old city.

Today the Samovodska charshiya is a significant cultural facility in Veliko Tarnovo. The construction of the complex, which includes the Samovodski market and main street is part of the program for development of Veliko Tarnovo as historical, cultural and tourist city. The complex consists of restored and adapted Revival houses from the second half or the end of the XIX century with the symbolic Veliko Tarnovo architecture. Among them is his house of Emilian Stanev.

Nowadays there are many shops for souvenirs and antiques as well as preserved craftsmen’s shops. This way are shown the architecture and economic life in the near past of the population of Veliko Tarnovo from the first decades of the XX century.
